A Chilly Bees Game

Marilyn was offered some free tickets to yesterday's Bees game at work.   The seats were right behind the dugout so we were pretty excited.  It was 80 degrees over the weekend but you just never know with the weather in Utah.  At one point it was actually snowing yesterday and I thought the game might be postponed.  But then it cleared up in the afternoon and we decided to go.  We had so much fun!  I can't begin to tell you how much I love spending time with Sean and Tashena!  We love going to Bees games and we have some silly rituals like what we get to eat (we opted for hot chocolate instead of ice cream, or at least three of us did).  We were laughing so hard I wondered if we were bothering the people around us!  The Bees played the Fresno Grizzlies and they scored three runs in the first two innings which was a lot of fun.  Then the Grizzlies scored three runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth inning which deflated the crowd a bit!  By the bottom of the sixth inning we were all really cold so we decided to leave and it might be a good thing we did because the Bees ended up losing 11-4.
It really doesn't matter what the score is because we always have so much fun and last night was a blast!  I am so grateful that I get to spend so much time with my niece and nephew.  Being an aunt is the best!

Camelot at CPT

On the last day of eighth grade I was invited by some friends to see the musical Camelot at the Promised Valley Playhouse.  I was beside myself with excitement to see my first live theatre production (and for the beginning of summer).  My parents made me get all dressed up (even though most of my friends were in jeans) which is a tradition that I still follow (even though most people don't seem to dress up any more).  I remember everything about the experience!  We sat in the balcony and I was completely awestruck by the opulence of the theater (sadly, it no longer exists).  I absolutely loved the performance!  I got to see the musical that will always hold a special place in my heart again last night at the CenterPoint Legacy Theatre and I got to take my niece!  CenterPoint is a community theatre and I am always so impressed with the quality of their productions.  This musical tells the story of King Arthur (Bryant Larsen) after he has pulled the sword Excalibur from the stone.  Merlin (William Hunt) guides him as best he can but then leaves him to rule by himself.  He marries the beautiful Guinevere (Amber Michelle Jones) and creates the Knights of the Round Table which brings the noble Lancelot (Austin Smith) to the court.  Eventually Guinevere and Lancelot fall in love but do not act on their love until Arthur's illegitimate son Mordred (Ryan Zaugg) comes to disrupt everything Arthur has worked to build.  Most of the songs, like "The Lusty Month of May," "If Ever I would Leave You," "How to Handle a Woman," and "Before I Gaze at You Again," are a little bit old fashioned (the former prompted a few giggles from Tashena) but they were very well done.  I was very impressed by the elaborate sets, which included free standing trees and castle pillars, and the medieval costumes.  Both Tashena and I agreed that we both really liked Jones as Guinevere and Zaugg as Mordred best.  This show is very nostalgic, to be sure, but I think everyone would really enjoy it!  It runs through May 12 and tickets may be purchased here.

Note:  This was not Tashena's first live theatre production.  I took her to Beauty and the Beast when she was five!

Prom 2018

Last night Tashena went to Bountiful High School's Prom with her date Noah, her best friend Channing, and their group.  I love how her group always seems to coordinate the color of their dresses!
I really loved Tashena's dress this year.  She always picks something really classic!

The girls.
The whole group!

Hamilton with Sean and Tashena

She is inimitable.  He is an original.  There are a million things they haven't done but just you wait!  They will blow us all away!  I think Hamilton is such a powerful show for many reasons so I really wanted Sean and Tashena to see it!  Luckily, I was able to find some reasonable tickets (relatively speaking) in the balcony for last night's performance so my sister and I could see it again and the kids could see it for the first time.  Sean was beside himself when he found out about it because he loves the music and Tashena was excited because it is such a status symbol at her school to see it.  They both loved it!  I knew that Sean would love it but I was so happy that Tashena loved it, too!  Sean's favorite character was Aaron Burr (Nik Walker) and he really loved his rendition of "The Room Where It Happens."  Tashena really liked the song "Burn" and she was impressed that Eliza (Shoba Narayan) actually burned the letters on stage.  It was really fun for my sister and I to see the same production for a second time because we both noticed new things that we hadn't picked up on the first time.  Since we were in the balcony, we really noticed how dramatic the lighting is and it was awesome to see the double turntable from that vantage (I sat in the balcony the first time I saw it but I've been on the main floor ever since).  I was particularly struck by the choreography in "My Shot," "Yorktown," "Hurricane," and "The World Was Wide Enough" because there is so much going on that you don't necessarily see if you just focus on the main performers.  It was  incredibly special to share something that I love so much with my niece and nephew and I'm very glad I had the opportunity!

Throwing Things

On Thursday I went to one of Tashena's track meets at Viewmont High School.  I didn't get to go to very many of her meets last year so I was really excited to see her in action.  She was entered in discus, shot put, and javelin but it was so cold and windy that the javelin event was canceled.  The wind makes the throwing events really difficult so I thought Tashena did a great job under the circumstances but she was disappointed.  She ended up winning the discus event with a distance of 109.1 and she took second place in the shot put with a distance of 30.1.  I was so proud of her!
I'm looking forward to going to more of her meets since I don't have as many commitments at school this year!

Christmas 2017

It was a wonderful Christmas this year!  On Christmas Eve I went to the final Christmas broadcast of Music and the Spoken Word with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.  I can't think of a better way to spend Christmas Eve!  The program was especially beautiful and I loved "Wexford Carol."  In the afternoon I went to see It's A Wonderful Life on the big screen at my local art house theater.  They show it every year and I've always wanted to see it so this year I decided to make it happen.  I love that movie!  In the evening Sean and Tashena opened their traditional Christmas pajamas.
We played shanghai rummy for the rest of the evening which is always so much fun!  Trent won!
Sean gave us very strict instructions about when we were opening presents in the morning.  I thought I was going to be late but I made it with two minutes to spare only to discover that he wasn't there yet!
Santa Claus came and he was very generous!
Sean got lots and lots of games for his Xbox, a wireless controller, and a drone (I kind of want one of those!).
Tashena got a bigger TV for her room, some new basketball shoes, a Kindle e-reader, and lots of body spray from Bath & Body Works (she has so much of that stuff).
I got some books, a sweater, a new chromebook, and lots of movies!  After a fantastic dinner we played shanghai rummy (Tashena won) and then Marilyn and I took Tashena (Sean didn't want to go because he has a million new games to play) to see The Last Jedi (it was the third time for me and I still love it!).

I hope that you had a wonderful holiday as well!  Just like last year, I plan on spending the rest of my winter break in a darkened theater trying to cross off a bunch of movies on my list (reviews will come in the new year).

Gingerbread Houses 2017

My nephew Sean is the keeper of the family traditions and he started asking me about doing gingerbread houses last weekend when I was over playing cards.  Every year I keep expecting that Sean and Tashena will no longer want to make them but it seems like they still look forward to it and that makes me happy.  We planned our epic gingerbread party for last Sunday night and it was as fun as it always is!
Various stages of construction.  We eat as much candy as we put on our houses!
